Secret Lives of Pets
Program Description
Do you wonder how your pets’ senses differ from your own? Want to learn about designing toys and experiences around their senses and personalities?

In this 2-week Summer program, participants will learn about biological differences between them and their pets, exploring how their senses impact their experience of the world. In the first week of this workshop, participants will learn how their pets see, hear, and smell the world differently than they do. Participants will use creative writing, science, and photography to think about life from their pet’s perspective. In the second week of this workshop, participants will design a toy or experience for their pet based on what they have learned about them!

We will have group check-ins daily at 9 am over Zoom on weekdays during the program. These check-ins will last around 30-60 minutes. We will give participants daily activities to do at home, at times of their choosing, on their own or with family members (including, of course, your pet). The at-home activities should take around 90-200 minutes depending on how engaged participants are.

We will be using Zoom, Google Classroom, and Snapchat throughout this program. We can help you make accounts for participants. We will be using Snapchat so participants can use two custom filters we have developed called DoggyVision and KittyVision. If guardians have privacy concerns we can discuss options such as creating temporary Snapchat accounts for young participants, as well as other alternatives. Participants are free to use their own personal accounts if they and their guardians are comfortable with that.

This program is part of a research study at the University of Colorado Boulder. We will compensate participants with a digital gift card.
